It also seems to be remarkably gameable for dishonorable ends (viz., all of Klingon politics weve ever seen). ADDED CLARIFICATION: Another way to put the question is whether honor provides you with enough moral guidance that youd be able to figure out the right thing to do in most situations, with a reasonable amount of confidence -- or whether honor is just a moral-sounding term they throw around in an attempt to justify whatever they wanted to do anyway. What is meant by honor honesty, fairness, or integrity in ones beliefs and actions: a man of honor. Usually, honors. evidence, as a special ceremony, decoration, scroll, or title, of high rank, dignity, or distinction: political honors; military honors. Many of these uses overlap, so lets fold some of them together. That leaves us with just definitions 1 and 5: Honesty, fairness, or integrity in ones beliefs and actions High public esteem; fame; glory These definitions are pretty clearly not the same. One might be regarded as personal honor, while the other is public honor. ![]() And this difference is a central point of conflict in Klingon culture. We can often see this manifest in the disagreements Worf has with his fellow Klingons. Worf does the honorable thing by being honest, fair, by demonstrating integrity. He does the honorable thing by accepting discommendation -- legal dishonor -- at one point. On the flipside, youve got more base Klingons that are concerned with honor glory that better fit the second definition there. They want the fame and glory associated with brave actions of battle. So, now that weve pinned down not only what honor is, but also that two potentially conflicting definitions of it can exist, where does that leave us with regard to your initial question: is it actually possible to live according to the value of honor Under the first definition, absolutely. Everything identified in that definition is generally regarded as a positive across numerous Terran cultures. And, again, I think we see this embodied in Worf with a high degree of frequency. Theres nothing intrinsically wrong with any of those accolades. Martin Luther King Jr is held in high public esteem. Hes famous. So is Stephen Hawking, or Neil deGrasse Tyson, or Bill Nye. But, at least in Western society, we view the active pursuit of these things as bordering on excessive arrogance. People who seek fame, are glory hounds, and so on are not viewed in a positive light. And I think the interpretation of what honor is turns out to be a central conflict in the cultural identity of Klingons. Chang did, too, even though Chang orchestrated Gorkons assassination.
